Road to Emmaus - Luke 24:13-25
“Jesus himself came up and walked along with them…” (Luke 24:15)
Often we hide from God. But sometimes, God hides from us. He does it to draw us out, to get us to tell him what we really think and feel. When everything has gone wrong, or when we’ve lost the plot – that’s when we most need God, but paradoxically, least feel like talking to him. These are the very moments God chooses to hide, so he can get closer to us than we would otherwise allow him. This is what happened to two of Jesus’ followers leaving Jerusalem in despair and disarray after Jesus’ death.
They were confused by the wild rumours of Jesus’ return from the dead. So Jesus walked with them but kept them from recognising him. Jesus got them talking until they had expressed everything they felt. Then Jesus started explained to them everything they needed to understand. Their hearts began to burn with renewed passion as they listened. Until finally, Jesus let them see that it had been him they were chatting to all along.
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the scripture to us?” (Luke 22:32)
