Wisdom - 1 Kings 4:29-34 and 9:1-9

“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth – for your love is more delightful than wine.  Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes; your name is like perfume poured out.  No wonder the maidens love you!  Take me away with you – let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers.” (Song of Songs 1:1-3)

David sons were wayward too.  Solomon was a chip off the old block.  It was Solomon who executed David’s dream of a prosperous, secure kingdom and at the centre of it all, Solomon built the most beautiful temple ever built – home for LOVE’s presence at the heart of LOVE’s people.  Solomon wrote many wise sayings (Proverbs) and also wrote erotic poetry (Song of Songs) as an analogy for our relationship with LOVE.  However wise he undoubtedly was, Solomon failed to follow his own maxims, becoming somewhat distracted (and no doubt exhausted) by his 700 wives and 300 concubines.
LOVE created sex.  Our sexual desire is an icon to the LOVE our souls ache for.  That ache is deep, authentic, and abandoned to seeking pleasure and connection.  LOVE wants this.  Solomon’s ‘Song of Songs’ depicts an intense erotic pursuit as a metaphor for LOVE’s pursuit of us.  Wisdom is responding to LOVE in free passion mixed with reverence and obedience.

Today let’s ask LOVE for a healthy fear that would keep us learning wisdom and remaining committed to LOVE’s ways.  Let’s also worship LOVE and be unafraid in talking to him about our bodies and our sexual desires.  Whether you’re married, single, sexually active or not right now – LOVE wants to talk to you all about it.  You don’t have to hide.  He’s not afraid of sex but created it, understands it and wants to help you live with it.  Deciding to live LOVE’s way with regard to sex is always the best decision and the one that will result in our greatest happiness and wellbeing.  We all need help in this area and fortunately, by his Holy Spirit that’s exactly what LOVE offers us.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” (Proverbs 1:7)
